X-Men: Days of Future Past

X-Men: Days of Future Past is the biggest X-Men movie to date. It's cast includes both the cast from the original X-Men series as well as the younger cast from X-Men First Class. This alone sets the stage for one of the greatest X-Men movies to date, but the story causes the movie to also be one of the most intriguing movies in the series. While those who have seen all the previous X-Men movies may even be lost at the beginning, its important to just accept the events and enjoy the movie. With the arsenal of mutants at his fingertips, director Bryan Singer makes some truly epic fight scenes. Anyone who is a fan of the X-Men series or even superheroes in general should take time to see this as it is one of the best movies of the year. I, along with others will be anticipating the next X-Men, X-Men: Apocalypse to see what can top this great movie.
One interesting side note about this movie is that one of the mutants is Quicksilver. Quicksilver is a mutant with the power to go incredibly fast but interesting about him is his role in the upcoming Avengers 2. Although he is a marvel character, his rights are owned by Fox, meaning that in the next Avengers he will be played by an entirely different actor. He will also be called a miracle, not a mutant. This is just one of the problems with selling off individual marvel movie rights, others include Spiderman and Wolverine, both of whom are supposed to be part of The Avengers.

The Prestige

You have probably either seen or heard about the movie Inception, but Christopher Nolan, the writer and director of Inception, produced a similar movie a few years prior. The Prestige is another mind mending movie but seems to be much more appealing than Inception. This is due mostly to it not being a complex situation but rather an intriguing trick for a well thought out plot.
The Prestige showcases two rival magicians who are fighting for their name in history with the greatest trick ever. This leads them both to take risks in their acts, as well as risks sabotaging the others act. The performances by the actors and actress in the movie, which include Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, and Michael Caine, is extraordinary. They bring the characters' personalities to live very well and help the audience feel the tension between the two magicians.
While the movie is mind bending just like Inception is, those people who disliked Inception for its complexity should not be discouraged. The Prestige's mind tricks are simply the sort that will make you watch it over and over again, picking up on clues that you missed. Anyone who enjoyed Inception, or other movies like it will enjoy this, as well as those who didn't.

Godzilla (2014)

Godzilla, released May 16th, takes many new spins on the original city destroying lizard. Many of these are well welcomed but others cause for a few lulls in an otherwise action packed movie. One of the main problems with the movie is its continuous flashes between the monsters and the humans. Although the humans and creatures do fight for some of the movie, most of the fights are between Godzilla and the Mutos. That being said, most of the movie is the build up to the main battle between Godzilla and the Mutos in San Fransisco, which causes the story to drag sometime.
One of my personal complaints was the casting and use of Bryan Cranston. While the trailers show him as one of the major characters, his role in the movie is much less than should have been. Instead the movie focuses more around his son and his involvement with the military. This leads for much of the movie to be the navy just following Godzilla, which tends to be very boring. My final complaint was with the 3D. I felt that it added nothing to the movie except for one single time during the title screen.
Overall however, this movie was very enjoyable to see. It kept to the original story and helped the audience's understanding of Godzilla grow alongside the characters. Although flaked with slow times for story development, the action scenes are truly epic. Anyone that enjoys an action movie should watch it, just skip on the 3D.

The Amazing Spiderman 2

This week, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was released to much anticipation from fans and critics. This is the second movie in "The Amazing" series and features new enemies that include Electro, The Green Goblin, and Rhino. Riding on the success of newer Marvel movies such as Iron Man and Captain America, The Amazing Spider Man 2 felt disconnected from the others. Due to a deal with Marvel years ago, Sony owns the rights to produce anything Spider-Man related. This causes a break between the two series, namely how the major organization S.H.I.E.L.D or any part of The Avengers, which Spider-Man eventually became part of in the comics.
Even though through this disconnect of the same universe, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 shines really well. It is very apparent that this is a huge movie, and lots of time and money went into making it a spectacular movie. In fact, this is the largest and most expensive movie to ever be filmed in New York City. One major complaint about the movie is that there are lots of new people and ideas that are brought up in this movie. This is seen as Harry Osborne, Peter Parkers best friend, is not mentioned once in the first Amazing Spider-Man but they are supposed best friends since grade school.
The constant building of new ideas and people allow for many new villains to come in future movies but also means that the beginning is mostly plot building. Its not until the final hour that most of the action and fight scenes happen. Overall, this movie is a great movie with some plot structure flaws which it tries to address. Definitively something that any Marvel fan should see.
